BJP Leaders Demand Preservation of Ganga's Sanctity Following Varanasi Iftar Incident
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 18 (NationPress) The apprehension of 14 individuals in Varanasi for allegedly disposing of non-vegetarian food into the Ganga during an Iftar gathering on a boat has stirred significant controversy among political figures on Wednesday.
The incident gained attention after a video emerged on social media, capturing a group holding an Iftar event on a boat in the river. This footage reportedly depicted people eating non-vegetarian dishes and allegedly throwing leftovers into the Ganga.
BJP MP Dinesh Sharma expressed to IANS that the Ganga is of profound sacred importance in Sanatan Dharma, esteemed as a maternal figure.
“The Ganga is revered as a mother in Sanatan Dharma, and it is vital for everyone to acknowledge and respect this. Actions that contradict this belief should be avoided. The law operates according to its guidelines,” he commented.
Sharma further mentioned that while Iftar during Roza is significant, it should occur in designated areas, considering both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food is consumed.
“People regard Maa Ganga as sacred; they offer its water to deities. Hence, it is crucial for all citizens of India to work towards maintaining its purity,” Sharma stated.
In response to the incident, Rajasthan Minister Madan Dilawar asserted that those accountable for polluting the river will face stringent consequences.
“Individuals who perform such acts, disrepecting the Ganga and contaminating the river will face severe repercussions. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will ensure that no one is spared,” he emphasized.
BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj underlined the necessity of honoring religious customs and the decisions made by community organizations.
“Every faith has its own committees, and it is our responsibility to respect and adhere to their decisions — this is an obligation for everyone,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Imran Masood highlighted that preserving the Ganga's purity is a collective duty but also pointed to broader environmental issues.
“It is everyone's responsibility to uphold the purity of the Ganga. Drains are being directly emptied into the river; action should be taken regarding that as well,” he suggested.
Another Congress MP, Ujjwal Raman Singh, stated he was not entirely informed about the specifics but maintained that action should occur if regulations were breached.
“I’m not aware of all the details. If individuals were observing Roza or Iftar on the boat, what is the issue? If wrongdoings occurred, or if there are rules that were violated, appropriate action should be taken,” he stated.
Congress leader Hussain Dalwai also commented on the situation, saying: “What Hitler did regarding human atrocities is being mirrored in our nation today.”
Authorities in Varanasi filed a case following a complaint from a BJP youth wing leader, including charges related to offending religious feelings, environmental pollution, and public nuisance.
As per the police, 14 individuals, including the boat operator, have been arrested in relation to the incident. Authorities are currently verifying the viral video’s authenticity and identifying other participants.
For millions of devotees, the Ganga is of immense spiritual significance, particularly in Varanasi, where individuals regularly conduct rituals, immerse the ashes of loved ones, partake in ceremonial baths, and make religious offerings along the ghats.
