Chennai, Aug 17 (NationPress) Renowned Tamil film director Vasantabalan has shared a touching birthday tribute to the esteemed director Shankar, revealing that his acclaimed film, Veyil, which earned a National Award, was made possible solely due to Shankar's influence.
On his social media platforms this Sunday, director Vasantabalan, celebrated for his notable works such as Veyil and Angaadi Theru, expressed, "Wishing you a delightful birthday, Shankar sir. Only because of you was Veyil possible."
In a poetic reference to the Tamil word Veyil, meaning the sun, Vasantabalan added, "It is only in the shadows of Veyil (the sun) that I still find rest today. Your profound love for me continues to uplift and inspire. It is by the grace of time that the journey which began with you in 1992 continues. Hearing your voice fondly calling me 'Balu' brightens my day. Love you, sir."
For those unfamiliar, Vasantabalan commenced his career as an assistant director under Shankar, who turned 62 on Sunday. He collaborated with Shankar on several hit films including Gentleman, Kadhalan, Indian, and Jeans before stepping into direction with Album. While the film was praised for its originality, it did not earn Vasantabalan the recognition he deserved.
His second feature, 'Veyil', featuring actors Bharath, Pasupathy, Bhavana, Priyanka Nair, and Sriya Reddy, became a superhit and catapulted the director to fame.
The film, celebrated for its emotional narrative about two brothers, was awarded the National Award in 2006 for Best Regional Feature Film (Tamil). Notably, Veyil was the first Tamil film to be showcased at Cannes, under the 'Tous les Cinemas du Monde' category, and its popularity led to a Bangladeshi Bengali remake titled Antor Jala.
Numerous prominent directors, actors, and production companies within Tamil cinema have also extended their birthday wishes to the illustrious director.
