New Delhi, Dec 10 (NationPress) Congress General Secretary and MP K.C. Venugopal launched a fierce critique of the NDA government in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, opposing the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners. He accused the Centre of systematically undermining the independence of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

“The concept of an unbiased electoral administrator has been blatantly crushed. The Election Commission has now succumbed to political influence and has turned partisan,” Venugopal asserted, as discussions on electoral reforms unfolded in the Lok Sabha. He emphasized that the right to vote is not a favor bestowed by any government but a core tenet of democracy.

Referencing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Venugopal claimed that the BJP government initiates SIR (Special Intensive Revision) whenever elections approach. "This occurred in Bihar, and now it is happening with elections looming in several states," he stated.

He reminded the assembly of the freezing of all Congress bank accounts just weeks prior to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections due to what he termed a minor two-week delay in filing income tax returns. “Can any democratic nation envision the principal opposition party’s accounts being frozen on such trivial grounds, deliberately timed before a general election?” he questioned.

Venugopal accused central agencies of being weaponized solely against opposition parties. “As soon as elections are announced, Income Tax, CBI, and ED become excessively active—raids every day on opposition figures. Nothing happens to BJP leaders; they are exonerated and walk free,” he stated.

The Congress leader cited debates from the Constituent Assembly and the Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling in the Anoop Baranwal case, where a five-judge Constitution Bench led by Justice K.M. Joseph mandated a selection committee comprising the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition, and Chief Justice of India to appoint Election Commissioners.

“The Supreme Court aimed for a neutral umpire to ensure free and fair elections. Immediately after, this government enacted legislation that removed the Chief Justice and substituted him with a Cabinet Minister chosen by the Prime Minister. Your apprehension of an independent Chief Justice is evident,” Venugopal charged.

He reserved his most pointed criticism for the new provision granting total legal immunity to the Election Commission and its officials. “From 1950 to 2023, no Election Commission ever requested such immunity. Courageous and unbiased Commissions operated without it. Why this sudden demand in 2023? The only explanation is a guilty conscience. This is not immunity; this is impunity. This serves as a lifetime washing machine for the Election Commission,” he alleged, directing his comments towards the Treasury benches.

Point of View

It is crucial to understand that the right to vote represents the essence of democratic governance. K.C. Venugopal's comments shed light on the ongoing discourse around electoral integrity and the role of institutions like the Election Commission. Maintaining the independence of these bodies is vital for upholding democratic values.
