Will the Lok Sabha Review KC Venugopal’s Remarks Following Ravi Shankar Prasad’s Objection?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 10 (NationPress) Tensions flared in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday when prominent BJP figure and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad called for the Congress General Secretary and MP from Alapuzha, K.C. Venugopal, to have his remarks removed from the official record. Prasad contended that Venugopal, who is involved as a petitioner in an ongoing Supreme Court case concerning the appointment of Election Commissioners, possessed “no moral right” to address the topic in Parliament.
In response to the objection, Lok Sabha Chair Krishna Prasad Tenneti promised that the remarks would be reviewed, potentially setting a significant precedent for Parliamentary conduct.
Prasad interjected during a discussion on electoral reforms, accusing the opposition of undermining the Election Commission’s credibility only after electoral losses. “When the opposition loses elections, it immediately starts questioning the credibility of the Election Commission and the entire electoral process. If the people of India are not voting for you, what can we do?” he stated, prompting enthusiastic applause from the Treasury benches.
Referencing the Congress’ disappointing performance in the recent Bihar Assembly elections, the Patna Sahib MP remarked, “Despite massive rallies by the Congress and its leaders shouting ‘SIR’ (Special Investigation Report) from rooftops, the people of Bihar gave them only five seats. The public sees the developmental work done by the BJP and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and votes for us. That is the reality.”
Venugopal had previously launched a vigorous critique of the government regarding the SIR, the Chief Election Commissioner’s appointment, and alleged “vote chori.”
However, Prasad asserted that Venugopal's comments should not be permitted to stand. “A person who has approached the Supreme Court on the same subject has no moral right to speak on the floor of this House. I request the Chair to expunge his entire speech from the record,” he insisted.
This confrontation highlighted the widening rift between the ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc concerning electoral reforms and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. Controversial elements — including legal immunity for Election Commissioners and the structure of the selection committee — remain contentious in the ongoing discourse.
The decision of the Lok Sabha Speaker regarding the status of K.C. Venugopal’s comments is anticipated to carry significant implications, given his dual role as both a parliamentarian and a Supreme Court petitioner on the very matter under consideration.
