Rahul Gandhi Responds to Prasad's Critique on LoP Duties
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 11 (NationPress) The Lok Sabha was filled with discord after BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad addressed the duties linked to the Leader of Opposition (LoP) role. In response, Rahul Gandhi asserted that "wild things have been said about me" and remarked, "the last time I spoke, I raised a fundamental question."
During the discourse, Prasad critiqued LoP Rahul Gandhi, raising queries about his behavior both in Parliament and during international trips.
Alluding to Congress leader K.C. Venugopal, the BJP representative insinuated that Gandhi required instruction on the expected conduct of the LoP in the House.
"Venugopal ji should impart wisdom to Rahul Gandhi regarding the conduct of the LoP," Prasad stated, eliciting strong reactions from the Opposition benches.
Prasad also condemned Rahul Gandhi for referencing what he termed an "unpublished memoir" of a former Army Chief during the House session. This led to loud disruptions, with Opposition MPs chanting slogans and protesting against the remarks.
In the midst of the chaos, Rahul Gandhi defended his statements in the House, saying, "The discussion here is about the democratic process and the role of the Speaker. My name has been mentioned multiple times, and wild things have been said about me."
He emphasized that Parliament encapsulates the collective voice of the populace, not just the ruling party.
"This House embodies the expression of the people of India. It does not solely represent one party, but the entire nation. Every time we attempt to speak, we face interruptions. The last time I spoke, I raised a fundamental question regarding the compromises made by our PM," stated LoP Gandhi.
In response to Gandhi's comments, Ravi Shankar Prasad stood by the Prime Minister and dismissed the allegations.
"I would like to remind the LoP that the Prime Minister of India can never be compromised," Prasad asserted.
As he participated in the debate concerning the motion to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Prasad referenced prior incidents in Parliament and presented precedents to counter the Opposition's claims about the House's functioning.
He recounted an incident during the UPA government when the BJP protested against what they viewed as unjust conduct in the Lok Sabha.
Prasad recalled that during the UPA-1 administration, when the 'cash-for-questions' matter was discussed, then LoP L.K. Advani was prevented from speaking by then Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.
According to Prasad, the BJP had vehemently objected to this action at the time and chose to stage a walkout from the House as a form of protest.
He remarked that despite requests from the Speaker for the party members to return, BJP MPs declined to do so because they disagreed with the way the proceedings were being conducted.
Prasad used this episode to bolster his argument that parliamentary protests have historical precedents and that disputes over procedures are not novel in the House's operations.
