New Delhi, Feb 5 (NationPress) Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed on Thursday that the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, deserves the opportunity to address Parliament. He emphasized that the objections raised against Gandhi's comments during the President’s Address have escalated into a more significant issue within Parliament.

In response to the disruptions, Tharoor remarked that the Leader of the Opposition was simply referencing information that is already publicly available.

"The LoP should be permitted to speak. He was citing a matter that has been published in a magazine; it’s no longer a secret. His intention was to present his viewpoint before moving on to other topics in the President’s Address. By creating such a substantial objection and preventing him from speaking, we have only resulted in a larger problem," he stated.

The Congress leader also recounted a recent mishap, revealing that he had sustained a hairline fracture after a fall outside the Parliament on Wednesday.

"Yesterday, upon exiting the Parliament, I fell. Unfortunately, I’ve incurred a hairline fracture," he mentioned.

Despite the injury, Tharoor confirmed he would persist in attending Parliament and fulfilling his official responsibilities.

"I will be present every day. I will participate in committee meetings next week as well, although regrettably, I will need to do so in a wheelchair," he added.

Previously, Tharoor apologized for missing internal party discussions, clarifying that he had to undergo medical tests.

"I apologize for my absence; I was at the clinic for an X-ray and had to visit the hospital. Consequently, I was unable to engage in discussions during our party meeting," he explained.

These comments arise amidst ongoing protests from the opposition in Parliament regarding issues stemming from the President’s Address, with the Congress accusing the government of limiting the ability of opposition leaders to speak within the House.

Point of View

Shashi Tharoor's advocacy for the Leader of the Opposition to speak in Parliament reflects a critical issue of democratic discourse. The ongoing protests signal a broader concern regarding the opposition's voice being stifled, which merits attention and dialogue in the political arena.
