Pinarayi Vijayan to Head LDF Campaign in Kerala Assembly Elections; Candidate List Coming Soon
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, February 27 (NationPress) - Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is set to lead the campaign for the Left Democratic Front in the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections, as announced by CPI(M) general secretary M. A. Baby on Friday. He emphasized that the party has yet to announce a candidate for the Chief Minister position.
During a politburo meeting in the national capital, Baby explained that while Vijayan will be at the forefront of the election efforts, the decision regarding the Chief Minister will only be made after the party secures a majority.
“At no point has the CPI(M) or the Left named a Chief Ministerial candidate. A decision will be reached once we obtain a mandate,” he stated.
Projecting optimism, Baby noted that the Left government in Kerala signifies an “essential alternative direction” in governance.
He highlighted that the development and welfare programs implemented over the last decade will favor the LDF in the elections.
In response to the recent issues concerning Health Minister Veena George, Baby claimed she has faced an attack that he described as part of a larger conspiracy.
He asserted that Kerala boasts the strongest public health system in the nation and suggested that rapid advancements in the public sector have disturbed private healthcare interests.
The CPI(M) is anticipated to announce its candidate list in the first week of March.
Baby referred to the Politburo as the party's core leadership while stressing that candidate selection is a structured and democratic process.
“Unlike other parties where decisions arise from hidden centers, we adhere to an elaborate and democratic system,” he said.
The criteria for candidate selection will consider youth representation, women, marginalized communities, minorities, social balance, and the ability to win.
A diverse mix of age groups will also be maintained, indicating both continuity and a measured generational shift in the party's electoral strategy.
In the 2021 Assembly elections for the 140-member Kerala Legislative Assembly, the CPI(M) nominated 75 candidates, winning 62 seats.
