Did CM Vijayan’s Daughter Challenge Karnataka HC Ruling?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru/Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 13 (NationPress) The ongoing legal dispute concerning the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) investigation into Exalogic, the IT company owned by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s daughter Veena Vijayan, took a significant turn on Monday. Veena has filed an appeal with the Karnataka High Court against a previous single judge's bench order that denied her request to suspend the investigation initiated last February.
The division bench has issued notices to both the SFIO and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, with the next hearing scheduled for December 3.
This latest development follows the Karnataka High Court's earlier decision not to stay the SFIO investigation into Exalogic, which is a considerable setback for Chief Minister Vijayan since Veena is the sole director of the company.
The court had briefly allowed the SFIO to advance with its investigation, with a more detailed ruling released subsequently.
The actions by the SFIO stem from findings of an earlier preliminary inquiry conducted by the Registrar of Companies (ROC), which was instigated after Congress MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan referenced a media report that cited an Income Tax official.
This report claimed that Exalogic had received Rs 1.72 crore from the Kochi-based mining firm CMRL, wherein the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation holds a 13 percent stake.
The SFIO has already collected statements from officials of CMRL and KSIDC.
As the appeal is now in front of a division bench, all attention is on Veena Vijayan’s next legal steps, including the potential escalation of the matter to the Supreme Court if the ruling is not in her favor.
Interestingly, Veena’s appeal to the Karnataka High Court coincides with reports that Vijayan’s son, Vivek Kiran Vijayan, has also been issued a notice by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the SNC Lavalin case, which involves his father. This case is currently pending before the Supreme Court.
The Congress-led UDF has intensified its criticism of the Vijayan family, labeling it as a family engaged in illicit business practices. These developments arise as Kerala approaches two crucial elections: local body elections in the coming months and the Assembly election scheduled for April/May.
