In New Delhi, on November 29 (NationPress), BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that the remarkable achievements of the Indian women’s cricket team added unique importance to the WPL auction conducted on Thursday. He expressed that this tournament has the potential to elevate women’s cricket significantly in the years ahead.
The inaugural mega auction for the WPL in New Delhi witnessed the selection of 67 players, including 23 international cricketers, with all five franchises investing a total of Rs 40.8 crore. The fourth season of the WPL is scheduled to take place from January 9 to February 5, with DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai hosting the initial 11 matches before relocating to the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.
Saikia remarked, “This WPL auction has gained considerable significance following the recent triumph of the Indian team. This victory has paved the way for Indian girls to advance their careers significantly. Hence, the auction holds special importance due to the recent accomplishments of our women’s team,” as he stated in a video shared by WPL on their ‘X’ account this past Saturday.
He also highlighted that the inclusion of USA pacer Tara Norris illustrates how the WPL is bridging the gap for players from associate nations to compete alongside the world’s elite. Norris, who played for the Delhi Capitals in WPL 2023 and achieved a five-wicket haul, will now join the UP Warriorz for WPL 2026.
“We’ve seen numerous young girls from the Indian team participating in the WPL, and we’re also providing opportunities for fringe players. Notably, a player from the USA has also been granted this chance. This signifies that cricket is expanding, and India is growing,”
Saikia added.“Following this World Cup victory, many prominent names are becoming involved in WPL and Indian cricket. Companies like ChatGPT are joining this league, which showcases the growth of the sport. I am confident that this will elevate women’s cricket to unprecedented heights in the forthcoming years,” Saikia concluded.
