Mumbai, May 23 (NationPress) Renowned actress Zeenat Aman reminisced about her past by sharing the lively track "Dulhan Maike Chali" from her 1974 movie "Manoranjan".
This song features a group of beautiful, cheerful sex workers who humorously educate a moralistic havaldar (played by Sanjeev Kumar) on their journey to the police station.
Reflecting on the film, Zeenat expressed on her Instagram, "The general sentiment towards most ‘remakes’ tends to be harsh, yet I take immense pride in having acted in Shammi Kapoor’s directorial debut Manoranjan, which is a reimagining of the American romantic comedy Irma La Douce."
This film is indeed a remake of the American classic, "Irma La Douce".
Describing how she secured her role in Shammi Kapoor's debut, the legendary star revealed, "During the 1970s, I lived in South Bombay with my mother, and the producer FC Mehra was our neighbor and friend. He was the one who introduced me to Shammi ji, for which I will always be thankful. It’s not that we developed a deep friendship; however, I had the professional privilege of collaborating with an incredibly talented, musical, and warm director. His vision was unwavering—he set the tone for everyone involved, yet he also showcased his playful nature. I fondly remember many lunches where he teased my co-star Sanjeev Kumar about his rumored romances, much to the amusement of everyone present."
Zeenat elaborated on how she embraced her character as a prostitute named Nisha in the film.
"Returning to the movie, as a young woman exploring my own feminism, I was eager to take on a role that challenged societal norms. In this scenario, the expectation was that a prostitute must be miserable, filled with shame, socially ostracized, and awaiting a heroic figure! To me, Nisha is a character who stands alongside Rupa and Janice. Truly iconic," she stated.
"Dulhan Maike Chali" features lyrics by Anand Bakshi, with the three Mangeshkar sisters providing vocals for the composition by RD Burman.
