New Delhi, Sep 14 (NationPress) Over 2,000 experts from more than 100 countries will gather in the capital city for the 89th General Meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), as announced by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution on Sunday.
This significant event, organized by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), is scheduled from September 15 to 19 at Bharat Mandapam.
Delegates will engage in discussions on international electrotechnical standards aimed at constructing a sustainable, all-electric, and interconnected world.
This marks the fourth occasion that India has hosted the esteemed IEC General Meeting, with previous gatherings occurring in 1960, 1997, and 2013.
The opening ceremony will be led by Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Minister of New & Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, while the IEC GM Exhibition will be inaugurated by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
Set to be the largest exhibition of its kind in India’s electrotechnical sector, it will showcase innovations in electric mobility, smart lighting, electronics, and IT manufacturing.
This event will also create global networking opportunities for Indian start-ups.
India will assume a pivotal role at the event as it takes on the Global Secretariat for Standardization in Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC), an essential area for clean, pollution-free energy solutions.
IEC Vice President Vimal Mahendru stated that the organization’s membership spans nearly 170 countries, encompassing 99 percent of the world's population and influencing 20 percent of global trade value.
He further emphasized that India’s leadership in LVDC standardization will enhance global efforts in clean technology development.
BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari underscored the Bureau’s initiatives to connect quality and standardization with young talent through student chapters and structured internship programs.
In alignment with the IEC Young Professionals Programme, 93 young professionals globally will take part in workshops, boot camps, and industry visits in India.
Sanjay Garg, BIS Director General Designate, was also present at the briefing. The meeting will feature over 150 technical and management committee discussions to establish next-generation standards.
Moreover, a series of workshops will concentrate on crucial areas such as sustainability, artificial intelligence, e-mobility, and inclusive growth through standards.
James Wood, Director of Communications at IEC, remarked that global surveys reveal robust public support for clean and green solutions, labeling India as a “real sustainability champion” and an ideal host for this event.
The IEC GM Exhibition will showcase 75 exhibitors, including leading industries, associations, and start-ups.
It will open to the public from September 16 to 19, between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, with free entry available through prior registration.
Over 2,000 students from schools and colleges are anticipated to visit the exhibition. Visitors can also take a Digital Sustainability Pledge at the BIS pavilion.
For every pledge, BIS will plant a sapling across its offices in India to further promote environmental protection.
Founded in 1906, the IEC is the world’s foremost organization for developing international standards in electrical, electronic, and related technologies, supported by a global network of 30,000 experts.
