Two-wheeler retail sales rise 13.4% in FY26, lead India's uneven auto recovery

India's automobile sector posted a demand-led but uneven recovery in FY2026, with two-wheelers emerging as the standout performers and urban premiumisation anchoring growth even as rural demand faced headwinds, according to a new report by Deloitte India. The findings highlight a sector in structural transition, shaped by shifting consumer preferences, evolving EV adoption, and policy tailwinds.

Two-Wheelers Lead the Charge

The two-wheeler segment recorded wholesale volumes up 10.7% year-on-year and retail sales rising 13.4% in FY26, making it the fastest-growing category in the auto sector. The market saw a strong shift toward premium motorcycles, which surged 40.7%, while scooter demand rose a robust 18.5%. Deloitte India attributed part of this momentum to GST rationalisation and pricing resets in H2 FY2026, which meaningfully reduced prices in the sub-350cc motorcycle segment, collapsing long-standing price gaps with commuter bikes.

Entry-level demand, however, remained under pressure across the broader automobile sector, reflecting the widening divide between aspirational urban buyers and price-sensitive rural consumers.

Passenger Vehicles: Premiumisation Continues

The passenger vehicle (PV) segment continued its premiumisation trend, with mid-size entry segments gaining share at the expense of traditional entry-level categories. The report noted a disciplined wholesale recovery alongside strong retail growth, as consumers traded up within familiar price bands. Feature-led upgrades and urban market demand were the primary drivers, with rural markets contributing less than in prior cycles.

Commercial Vehicles Enter a Goods-Led Upcycle

Commercial vehicles (CVs) grew approximately 12.6% year-on-year, entering what Deloitte India described as a goods-led upcycle. The expansion was supported by sustained infrastructure activity and replacement demand, as fleet operators upgraded ageing vehicles in response to increased freight movement tied to government capital expenditure programmes.

EV Adoption: Growing but Geographically Uneven

Electric two-wheelers grew 21.8% in FY26, yet overall EV penetration rose only modestly to 6.5%, as cost economics and charging infrastructure gaps kept a significant share of buyers anchored to internal combustion engine (ICE) models. Kerala led all states with 14.1% EV penetration, while Karnataka and Odisha showed deepening adoption. Notably, Maharashtra's EV share declined to 9.2% despite higher absolute volumes, as ICE demand rebounded sharply in the state.
