Seoul, Jan 23 (NationPress) Hyundai Motor, Kia, and two additional car manufacturers are set to voluntarily recall over 340,000 vehicles due to faulty parts, according to the transport ministry's announcement on Thursday.

The four automakers, which include Mercedes-Benz Korea and Tesla Korea, are recalling a total of 343,250 units across 11 different models, as reported by the ministry.

Hyundai Motor plans to recall 141,125 units from two models, including the Porter II Electric, due to a design flaw in the battery sensor. Additionally, 19,830 units of the Nexo will also be recalled due to a malfunction in the emergency light switch, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

Kia's Sorento Hybrid and another model, comprising 89,598 units, will undergo rectification due to a software malfunction.

Mercedes-Benz Korea is in the process of recalling 4,068 units from two models, including the S580 4MATIC, due to a software issue with the engine control unit. Tesla Korea is addressing 2,425 units from the Model Y and another model for a software error.

The total number of vehicles recalled voluntarily by manufacturers in South Korea reached a record high last year, with almost 80 percent attributed to the domestic giant Hyundai Motor Group.

In total, 5.12 million units across 1,684 different models faced recalls due to defects, according to the Korea Road Traffic Authority. Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp. accounted for a joint total of 4.07 million units, representing 79.2 percent of the overall figures.

This number exceeds last year's 1.69 million recalled units and breaks the prior record of 3.25 million units set in 2022.

The recalls were primarily driven by manufacturing defects discovered in several popular models of Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp. within the Hyundai Motor Group.

"Given that many of the recalls involved popular models, the overall volume naturally saw an increase," remarked an agency official.

Electric vehicles also experienced a notable surge this year, with over 1.2 million units recalled, surpassing 707,088 units in 2021 and 187,560 in 2020.
