Finance Minister Sitharaman Reports Over 57 Crore Jan Dhan Accounts, Majority Held by Women

New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) A staggering 57.78 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been established, with a total deposit of Rs 2,94,702 crore as of February 25, according to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's statement on Monday.
Among these accounts, 32.21 crore (representing 55.8 percent) are held by women. Additionally, around 45.17 crore accounts (or 78.2 percent) were created in rural and semi-urban regions, as noted in the Lok Sabha by Sitharaman.
The Finance Minister also highlighted that the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) has recorded 26.88 crore cumulative enrollments (up to February 25), offering life insurance coverage of Rs 2 lakh for death by any cause.
Furthermore, through the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), there have been 57.11 crore total enrollments (as of February 25, 2026) to provide a yearly accidental cover of Rs 2 lakh (for death or complete disability) and Rs 1 lakh (for partial disability).
Under the Atal Pension Yojana (APY), cumulative enrollments have reached 8.84 crore, ensuring a monthly pension for eligible contributors until February 25 this year.
Likewise, the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) has sanctioned 57.26 crore loans, totaling Rs 39.48 lakh crore, aimed at providing collateral-free financial assistance to micro and small enterprises, up to Rs 20 lakh for income-generating activities across various sectors, including agriculture (as of February 27).
Sitharaman further stated that 2.75 lakh loans totaling Rs 62,790 crore have been approved under the Stand-Up India Scheme (SUPI) to support Scheduled Caste, Schedule Tribe, and women entrepreneurs in establishing greenfield projects in sectors such as manufacturing, trading, and agriculture-related activities (as of March 31, 2025).
Additionally, a strong financial inclusion framework known as JAM—a Jan Dhan Aadhaar Mobile pipeline—has been established to connect Jan-Dhan accounts with mobile numbers and Aadhaar. This initiative is extensively utilized by various ministries and departments for delivering numerous welfare benefits, including Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), among others.
