New Delhi, Feb 24 (NationPress) The influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on the agricultural sector is nothing short of remarkable, stated Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Monday.
In a video shared on the social media platform X, Nadella emphasized the role of AI in enhancing the productivity of a small farm located in Baramati, Maharashtra. The video illustrates how AI-driven solutions are assisting farmers in optimizing their resources, thereby boosting their output.
“One particular instance I wanted to spotlight was that of a small farmer affiliated with the Baramati Co-op, who utilized this powerful technology to significantly increase the productivity of his land. The figures they presented regarding reductions in chemical use, improvements in water management, and ultimately, yield were extraordinary,” he remarked in the video.
Additionally, he noted the application of geospatial data gathered from drones and satellites, which can be utilized by farmers in their local languages.
“One of the remarkable aspects is sensor fusion. We’ve been discussing it for many years. This involves utilizing geospatial data and spatial-temporal data sourced from drones, satellites, and the soil, all interconnected in real-time. Then, applying AI to translate this information back into actionable insights for farmers, allowing them to pose questions in their own vernacular. Witnessing this integration is truly remarkable,” Nadella explained.
In response to the video, Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, commented, “AI will enhance everything.”
In 2022, Microsoft initiated a project focused on agricultural technology in Baramati, partnering with the Agricultural Development Trust (ADT), employing AI tools to assist farmers in achieving sustainable and healthy harvests. This collaboration with Microsoft Research also aims to merge AI, satellite imagery, and various tools to revolutionize the farming industry.
Previously, Nadella acknowledged that one of his major oversights was not foreseeing the rise of search as a dominant market, which Google effectively capitalized on.
He stated that Microsoft had initially believed the web would stay decentralized, failing to recognize that search would evolve into its most lucrative business model.
Nadella referred to this as a valuable lesson, commenting, “We (Microsoft) overlooked what became the most significant business model on the web because we assumed the web would remain distributed.”
