New Delhi, Sep 20 (NationPress) The aerospace leader Airbus has revealed its plans to establish a Research and Development (R&D) Centre of Excellence at Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya in Gujarat, underlining its dedication to enhancing India's innovation landscape.
During a meeting with Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, Jurgen Westermeier, managing director of Airbus, shared that the company procures components exceeding $1 billion from over 100 Indian suppliers annually.
Vaishnaw expressed, "It's encouraging to learn from Mr. Jurgen Westermeier, MD of Airbus India, about their sourcing of over $1 billion in components and collaboration with 100+ Indian suppliers. Additionally, Airbus will soon inaugurate an R&D Centre of Excellence here at Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya.”
Airbus has also set up a Digital Centre in Bengaluru, which serves as the cornerstone of its digital advancements. This facility is the second-largest digital hub of Airbus, following its headquarters located in Toulouse, France.
In 2018, the company enhanced its digital operations in India with the launch of a Global Capability Centre (GCC) to support all global divisions. Currently, Airbus employs over 3600 professionals across various sites, including more than 1500 skilled IT experts dedicated to providing IT solutions.
Collaboration with prestigious Indian institutions on joint R&D projects is also a key focus for Airbus, with initiatives aimed at sustainability, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and big data.
The firm stated that its local engagement in sourcing, engineering, innovation, maintenance, and training services exemplifies its commitment to fostering the local ecosystem.
India is regarded as a strategic resource hub for Airbus, offering exceptional talent and research that fuels the aerospace industry.
In August, Airbus Helicopters awarded a contract to Mahindra Aerostructures Pvt Ltd. (MASPL) to produce the main fuselage for its H125 helicopter, further solidifying their partnership and supporting the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
In December 2024, Air India, owned by the Tata Group, placed an order for 100 Airbus aircraft, which includes 10 wide-body A350s and 90 narrow-body A320 Family aircraft.
