Apple Expands American Manufacturing Programme with New Partnerships
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 26 (NationPress) On Thursday, Apple revealed the addition of new partners to its American Manufacturing Programme (AMP), reinforcing the company's longstanding dedication to advancing manufacturing and essential component production within the United States.
Apple is collaborating with Bosch, Cirrus Logic, TDK, and Qnity Electronics to produce vital materials and components domestically for Apple products distributed globally. This initiative is set to create jobs and enhance America's manufacturing strength, with a planned investment of $400 million allocated for these new projects through 2030.
“At Apple, we are committed to the power of American innovation and manufacturing, and we are excited to partner with more companies to create critical components and state-of-the-art materials for our products right here in the U.S.,” stated Tim Cook, Apple's CEO.
“Today, we are collaborating with esteemed partners such as Bosch, Cirrus Logic, TDK, and Qnity Electronics to further enhance Apple’s U.S. supply chain through our AMP. This exemplifies the possibilities that arise when we invest in American ingenuity, and we look forward to building the future together,” Cook emphasized.
This expansion accelerates AMP's momentum, a crucial aspect of Apple’s $600 billion, four-year commitment to U.S. manufacturing and innovation.
Initial partners of the program, including Amkor, Applied Materials, Broadcom, Coherent, Corning, GlobalFoundries, GlobalWafers America, MP Materials, Samsung, and Texas Instruments, are already making significant strides in boosting advanced manufacturing in America and fortifying Apple’s domestic supply chain.
For the first time, long-time Apple supplier TDK will produce sensors for Apple in the U.S.
The two companies have been working together for over 30 years on various technologies, including advanced tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sensors that facilitate key iPhone functionalities like camera stabilization.
TDK’s U.S. facility will provide TMR sensors for devices shipped globally and will enhance the volume of chips sourced from U.S. silicon supply chains.
Apple, Bosch, and TSMC will collaborate to manufacture integrated circuits (ICs) for Bosch’s new sensing hardware at TSMC Washington in Camas, Washington. These ICs are crucial for features such as crash detection, activity tracking, and elevation in Apple devices.
Additionally, Apple is partnering with Cirrus Logic and GlobalFoundries to establish new semiconductor process technologies at GlobalFoundries’ facility in Malta, New York. This new silicon process will be available in the U.S. for the first time to facilitate essential technologies for Apple products. This partnership enables Cirrus Logic to develop mixed-signal solutions for various Apple applications, including advanced ICs for Face ID systems.
Qnity Electronics and HD MicroSystems will deliver cutting-edge materials and technologies vital for semiconductor production and advanced electronics. This collaboration is set to introduce innovations for high-performance computing and AI, reinforcing domestic production of critical components and enhancing America’s leadership in advanced technology.
Apple’s dedication to bolstering American jobs and manufacturing is also reflected in the Apple Manufacturing Academy, which was launched last fall in Detroit. The academy provides hands-on training in AI, automation, and smart manufacturing to small- and medium-sized manufacturers, having already supported nearly 150 businesses through numerous free in-person training sessions and virtual programs.
