New Delhi, May 24 (NationPress) Apple's move to enhance iPhone manufacturing in India demonstrates the increasing global trust in the nation's manufacturing framework, according to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, President of the BJP's Kerala unit and former Union Minister. By the close of 2025, approximately 25 percent of all iPhones will be produced in India, a significant increase from nearly none a few years prior when China was the leader in Apple's supply chain.
Chandrasekhar highlighted that forward-thinking initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, along with the Indian government's persistent efforts, are propelling India towards becoming a global center for high-tech manufacturing.
Foxconn, a major Apple supplier, has committed to an investment of Rs 12,700 crore in India, with partners such as Pegatron and Wistron also enhancing their operations.
The Taiwanese electronics giant's facility in Bengaluru is nearing completion, with commercial iPhone shipments anticipated to commence as early as June.
"India is on a solid path to achieve $300 billion in electronics manufacturing by 2027, with a target of $120 billion for exports," he asserted.
Just ten years ago, over 80 percent of smartphones in India were imported, with minimal exports.
"I take pride in my role in strengthening the India-Apple alliance. This is merely the beginning," Chandrasekhar remarked.
Apple's contract manufacturers in India are already expanding their operations. Foxconn's plant in Bengaluru has the potential to produce up to 20 million iPhones at full capacity, marking an impressive manufacturing capability.
In the past year, iPhones valued at $22 billion were assembled in India, with the Tamil Nadu-based Foxconn contributing nearly 50 percent of Apple's exports.
Exports from Foxconn's facility have surged by over 40 percent compared to the same timeframe last year.
Currently, India constitutes nearly 20 percent of Apple's global iPhone production, highlighting the country's significance in Apple's international strategy.
The Indian market is also experiencing robust growth for Apple. In just the first quarter of 2025, over three million iPhones were dispatched from India—setting a new record.
Simultaneously, US President Donald Trump has threatened a 50 percent tax on all imports from the European Union, along with a 25 percent tariff on Apple products unless iPhones are manufactured in the United States.
