Bandhan Bank shares crash 15% after RoA guidance cut to 1.2–1.4%
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bandhan Bank shares plunged more than 15 per cent on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, after the Kolkata-based lender slashed its return-on-assets (RoA) outlook — even as it posted a stronger-than-expected quarterly profit. The stock was trading at ₹176.95 intra-day, down ₹31.88 or 15.27 per cent, marking one of the sharpest single-session falls in the bank's recent history.
The Guidance Cut That Rattled Markets
Bandhan Bank now expects its RoA to average 1.2–1.4 per cent by the end of FY27, a reduction of 40 basis points from its earlier projection of 1.6–1.8 per cent. The bank attributed the downward revision to narrower net interest margins and elevated operating expenses, including higher technology-related costs and increased funding costs driven by external uncertainties.
The bank's RoA stood at 1 per cent as of June 2026 — up 20 basis points year-on-year but down 11 basis points sequentially, underscoring the near-term margin pressure.
What the Management Said
Partha Pratim Sengupta, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Bandhan Bank, addressed analysts at a post-earnings call, saying: 'Our medium-term strategic objective remains unchanged, and we continue to work towards achieving the guided level of RoA. The prevailing external environment may influence the pace at which we get there.'
Sengupta pointed to higher funding costs and technology expenditure as the primary drivers behind the guidance revision, while reaffirming the bank's long-term direction.
Q1 FY27 Earnings: The Numbers
Despite the guidance cut, Bandhan Bank's quarterly results were ahead of estimates. Net profit surged 35 per cent year-on-year to ₹502 crore for Q1 FY27, up from ₹372 crore in the same period last year. Net interest income (NII) rose 5.9 per cent to ₹2,921 crore, while net total income edged up 1.2 per cent to ₹3,524 crore.
Gross advances expanded 16.4 per cent year-on-year to ₹1,55,555 crore as of June 2026. Within the loan book, the retail segment (excluding housing) grew 45 per cent, wholesale banking jumped 38 per cent, and the housing loan book expanded 6 per cent.
Asset Quality Improves
On the asset quality front, gross non-performing assets (NPA) improved by 182 basis points year-on-year, while net NPA declined by 43 basis points over the same period — a positive signal amid the broader margin headwinds. The bank reiterated its commitment to customer-centric, digitally enabled growth through an expanded distribution network and broader product offerings.
What Investors Are Watching
The market's sharp reaction reflects a classic earnings paradox: solid profit growth overshadowed by a forward-guidance downgrade. For Bandhan Bank — which has historically carried a premium valuation tied to its high-RoA profile — a 40-basis-point cut to the medium-term target is a material reset. Analysts will likely reassess price targets in the sessions ahead, with attention focused on whether margin compression stabilises in Q2 FY27.
