Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Ministry of Commerce & Industry on Monday, 24 August 2026 released provisional estimates of the Service Producer Price Indices (SPPIs) for Q1 FY27 (April–June 2026), showing broad improvement across banking, pension fund management, and transport services. The data offers an early read on price trends across key service sectors in the Indian economy.
Banking and Financial Services
The Services PPI for banking edged up to 100.9 in Q1 FY27 from 100.5 in the preceding quarter. More notably, the Banking Service Contribution Index climbed to 134.8 from 131.5, recording a year-on-year rise of 6.9 per cent — a sharp acceleration from the 3.30 per cent growth logged in Q4 FY26.
The Management of Pension Funds Service Price Index also strengthened considerably, rising to 113.3 in Q1 FY27 from 103.8 in the previous quarter. Its year-on-year growth stood at 5.20 per cent, reversing a contraction of 0.76 per cent recorded in Q4 FY26.
The Insurance Service Price Index held steady at 102.9, though its year-on-year inflation ticked up to 0.98 per cent from 0.68 per cent in the preceding quarter. The Securities Transaction Service Price Index slipped to 89.9 from 91.7 in Q4 FY26, with a year-on-year decline of 1.32 per cent.
Transport Services: Air Fares Surge
The standout movement came from air travel. The Air Passenger Service Price Index surged to 126.4 in Q1 FY27 from 106.9 in Q4 FY26, reflecting a year-on-year jump of 31.94 per cent — the sharpest rise among all tracked services. This aligns with the broader trend of elevated domestic airfares during the summer travel season.
Railway services showed a more measured trend. The overall railway index edged up marginally to 103.4 from 103.3 in Q4 FY26. Railway passenger service prices remained unchanged at 103.5, while freight service prices rose slightly to 103.3.
Telecom Prices Hold Stable
The Telecom Service Price Index held at 112.2 in Q1 FY27, with year-on-year price growth of 0.72 per cent — indicating relative stability in the sector despite recent tariff revisions by major operators.
Coverage and Methodology
According to the government, the Service PPIs currently cover seven services and are benchmarked to a base year of 2022-23. Importantly, the indices do not carry weights across services, as they do not yet cover the entire services sector. This limits direct cross-sector comparisons.
The next release — covering Q2 FY27 data — is scheduled for 25 November 2026.
