New Delhi, Nov 29 (NationPress) On Saturday, the government announced that it has forged agreements with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for three loans exceeding $800 million aimed at various projects in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. Additionally, a Technical Assistance grant of $1 million has been allocated for initiatives in Assam.

The loans include funding for the Maharashtra Power Distribution Enhancement Programme for Agricultural Solarisation ($500 million), the Indore Metro Rail Project ($190.6 million), and the Gujarat Skills Development Programme ($109.97 million). The grant will support the forthcoming Sustainable Wetland and Integrated Fisheries Transformation (SWIFT) Project in Assam.

In Maharashtra, the $500 million ADB-supported initiative is set to modernize rural power infrastructure, encourage distributed renewable energy generation, and enhance agricultural productivity by ensuring farmers receive reliable daytime solar electricity for irrigation.

A Finance Ministry statement reveals that the program aims to deliver daytime electricity to at least 900,000 agricultural consumers by 2028.

Key elements of the program include upgrading Maharashtra's electricity distribution network to facilitate renewable integration, which involves enhancing substations, installing transformers, constructing high- and low-tension lines, and deploying 500 MWh of battery storage.

The loan in Japanese Yen for the Indore Metro Project ($190.6 million) will support the development of an 8.62-km underground Metro line with seven stations, linking congested regions of Indore to the airport.

This project incorporates multimodal integration with existing bus and feeder services, thereby improving access to educational institutions and marketplaces. The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited will oversee the implementation, with operations expected to launch by January 2030.

The $109.97 million Skills Development Programme in Gujarat aims to prepare the state's workforce with industry-aligned, advanced skills that enhance job readiness in rapidly growing sectors such as logistics, automotive, manufacturing, information technology, renewable energy, healthcare, and agri-tech.

Managed by the state's Labour, Skill Development, and Employment Department in collaboration with Kaushalya: The Skill University (KSU), the program will upgrade 11 mega ITIs, establish centers of excellence, and partner with affiliated private training providers through a hub-and-spoke model anchored by KSU.

Point of View

The government's collaboration with the ADB to secure substantial funding for developmental projects is noteworthy. It highlights a proactive approach to enhancing infrastructure and workforce preparedness, which ultimately contributes to national growth and sustainability.
