New Delhi, March 13 (NationPress) Chandigarh and Daman and Diu have successfully fulfilled their government building rooftop solar targets at an impressive rate of 100 percent, positioning themselves as frontrunners in the nation’s clean energy initiatives, according to a government announcement on Thursday.

Other states such as Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu are also excelling, making substantial contributions to the national installation totals.

The government is diligently overseeing the progress across all states to guarantee the effective and timely execution of this initiative, aiming to reach 1 crore households by the year 2026-27, as per the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY), recognized as the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar program, has celebrated a remarkable achievement with 10 lakh homes now powered by solar energy.

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, this groundbreaking scheme is rapidly transforming India’s energy framework.

With 47.3 lakh applications submitted, the project has already allocated Rs 4,770 crore in subsidies to 6.13 lakh beneficiaries, making solar energy more attainable than ever before.

The program features accessible financing options, including collateral-free loans up to Rs 2 lakh at a 6.75 percent subsidised interest rate through twelve public sector banks, which has significantly propelled adoption rates.

Currently, 3.10 lakh loan applications have been received, with 1.58 lakh sanctioned and 1.28 lakh disbursed, fostering financial inclusion for a wider population.

With a streamlined 15-day subsidy transfer process and the potential for zero electricity bills for many participants, the initiative is not only energizing homes but also empowering communities.

Every solar installation under PMSGMBY mitigates carbon emissions equivalent to planting 100 trees, steering India toward a cleaner, greener, and self-sufficient future, as stated by the ministry.

The program provides families with free electricity through the installation of subsidized rooftop solar panels, significantly lowering their energy expenses.

By advocating the extensive use of solar energy, the initiative is projected to save the government an estimated Rs 75,000 crore annually in electricity expenditures.

The program promotes the adoption of renewable energy, aiding in the creation of a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy mix in India.

The ministry asserts, "The transition to solar energy under this scheme will help lower carbon emissions, supporting India's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint."
