New Delhi, June 5 (NationPress) Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw hailed the Chenab Bridge, located on the Jammu and Srinagar railway line, as a true engineering marvel. He highlighted that the bridge is engineered to withstand winds of up to 260 kilometres per hour and is situated in Seismic Zone 5.

In discussions with reporters about the bridge's remarkable features, the Minister noted its intricate design, with a foundation that spans an area equivalent to half a football field.

Approximately 30,000 tonnes of steel have been utilized in the construction of this bridge, which is now recognized as the highest railway arch bridge in the world.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate two Vande Bharat trains in Katra on Friday. Before this, he will visit both Chenab and Anji bridges—two notable engineering feats on the rail link connecting Katra and Srinagar.

Vaishnaw emphasized the significance of the Anji Bridge, noting that while many cable bridges exist on highways, this is the first instance of a cable bridge being constructed for railway use.

Additionally, he mentioned the extensive network of tunnels on the Jammu-Srinagar railway line, with a remarkable 111-km stretch from Katra to Banihal featuring tunnels that cover 97 km.

The Railways Minister also revealed plans to establish four terminals along the Jammu-Srinagar rail line, facilitating easier transport of goods. The Jammu station will act as a transit hub for travelers heading to Srinagar.

Currently, work is in progress on platforms 5 and 6 at Jammu station, which means the Vande Bharat Express to Srinagar will temporarily operate between Katra and Srinagar. This construction is expected to conclude by September, enabling direct service from Jammu to Srinagar.
