Mumbai, April 26 (NationPress) The government is set to host the ‘Coastal States Meet 2025’ on Monday in Mumbai, unveiling fisheries projects valued at Rs 255 crore to enhance the marine fisheries sector.

The Department of Fisheries, operating under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, is facilitating the event chaired by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, as stated in an official announcement on Saturday.

Singh will kick off and lay the groundwork for significant projects across seven coastal states and union territories (UTs) with a combined budget of Rs 255.30 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), highlighting the government's dedication to advancing the fisheries sector in these regions.

The minister will also introduce several crucial initiatives aimed at fortifying marine fisheries and endorsing sustainable practices, including Marine Fisheries Census Operations, the Turtle Excluder Device (TED) project, and the release of the Standard Operating Procedure for Vessel Communication and Support System.

The fisheries sector in India is vital for supporting rural livelihoods and boosting the national economy.

With an extensive coastline and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) covering 2.02 million square kilometers, India is endowed with abundant marine resources. The marine fisheries sector has a considerable potential estimated at 5.31 million tonnes.

Coastal states and union territories, encompassing approximately 3,477 coastal fishing villages, contribute to 72 percent of the nation’s total fish production and represent 76 percent of India’s overall seafood exports.

Certificates will be awarded during the event to exemplary cooperatives, FFPOs, fisheries startups, and climate-resilient coastal fishing villages.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PMMKSSY), beneficiaries will also obtain Aqua Insurance certificates and Kisan Credit Cards (KCC).

Significantly, the government has introduced Aqua Insurance for the first time, providing specialized financial protection for aquafarmers.

This groundbreaking initiative guarantees targeted insurance coverage, digital accessibility, and dedicated support for marginalized communities within the fisheries sector.

The ‘Coastal States Meet 2025’ will also host essential technical sessions aimed at delivering practical policy insights and technical guidance to bolster marine fisheries, ensure safety, promote sustainable mariculture, and enhance export capabilities.

Additionally, the event will feature an exhibition showcasing innovative technologies, products, and initiatives in the fisheries and aquaculture realm, promoting knowledge sharing and emphasizing best practices.
