Seoul, Dec 21 (NationPress) In a significant ruling, South Korea's state-run consumer protection agency has mandated SK Telecom Co to compensate each user with 100,000 won (approximately $67) following a substantial data breach earlier this year.

This decision from the Korea Consumer Agency was spurred by a request for dispute mediation from 58 consumers in May, after a breach that impacted all 23 million users of the company, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

In April, SK Telecom revealed a significant leak of universal subscriber identity module (USIM) data from its servers, leading the company to offer complimentary USIM replacements to its users and instigating a regulatory investigation.

In August, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) penalized SK Telecom with a record fine of 134.8 billion won.

The agency noted, "Considering the joint investigation conducted by the government and private sector in July and the ruling by the PIPC, it was recognized that the hacking incident caused damage to consumers."

As per the ruling, Korea Consumer Agency has instructed SK Telecom to implement a 50,000 won reduction in monthly subscription fees along with 50,000 won in credits, totaling 100,000 won per user.
