Seoul, July 23 (NationPress) Consumer sentiment in South Korea has surged to a remarkable four-year peak in July, fueled by optimism regarding the government's supplementary budget and various initiatives aimed at bolstering the economy, along with strong exports, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK) on Wednesday.

The composite consumer sentiment index (CCSI) reached 110.8 this month, reflecting an increase of 2.1 points from June, based on a survey by the BOK, as reported by the Yonhap news agency.

This represents the highest figure since June 2021, when the index recorded 111.1, marking the fourth consecutive month of growth. Previously, the index stood at 108.7 last month, setting a four-year record.

Consumer sentiment had plummeted below 90 in December after former President Yoon Suk Yeol implemented martial law, remaining in the 90-point range until it climbed over 100 in May.

A reading above 100 indicates that optimists surpass pessimists, while below 100 signifies the opposite.

The rise in consumer sentiment is attributed to the Lee Jae Myung administration's efforts to rejuvenate economic growth and enhance private consumption.

Earlier this month, the National Assembly and Cabinet sanctioned a 31.8 trillion-won (approximately US$22.94 billion) supplementary budget to counteract declining domestic demand and external challenges.

“Despite uncertainties surrounding tariff discussions with the United States, the index saw a modest rise due to improved consumer spending and robust exports,” stated a BOK official.

Exports climbed by 4.3 percent year-on-year in June, totaling $59.8 billion, driven by heightened global demand for semiconductors, reversing a decline from the previous month.

The subindex gauging consumer expectations for housing prices dropped by 11 points to 109 in July, as the government tightened lending regulations, causing a slowdown in home price growth after a recent surge.

This July figure reflects the most significant decline since July 2022, when it fell by 16 points, according to the BOK.
