Did the Delaware Court Just Overturn a $1 Billion Judgment Against Byju Raveendran?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Dec 10 (NationPress) The Delaware Court has overturned its previous judgment of $1 billion, following a review of new submissions presented through a motion to amend the ruling made on November 20. The Court acknowledged that damages were not accurately assessed previously and has mandated a new set of proceedings to take place in early January 2026 to determine if any damages are owed.
Raveendran's legal representatives contend that GLAS Trust and the lenders withheld or misrepresented vital information throughout the case.
They assert that this misinformation misled both the courts and the public, contributing to the downfall of the edtech sector, resulting in the loss of approximately 85,000 jobs, impacting nearly 250 million students, and destroying tens of billions of dollars in enterprise value.
Raveendran is also contemplating further legal actions against GLAS Trust and other involved parties.
Michael McNutt, a litigation advisor for Raveendran, stated that the revised ruling is of great importance, as the Court has not deemed Raveendran responsible for any damages at this point. “Byju Raveendran has not been found liable for any monetary damages to the Plaintiffs,” McNutt emphasized.
He also noted that during the forthcoming damages trial, they intend to demonstrate that the plaintiffs incurred no losses due to Raveendran's actions. Instead, he claims that the plaintiffs deliberately misled several courts in the US, India, and beyond to gain an advantage, while causing harm to Raveendran, Divya Gokulnath, and Riju Ravindran.
He further mentioned that they might pursue sanctions against the plaintiffs' legal counsel and will move forward with a planned $2.5 billion lawsuit before the year concludes.
“We will pursue the necessary remedies in the Delaware Courts and through the $2.5 billion lawsuit that we plan to file before the end of the year,” he added.
In a significant development in the cross-border legal battle, Byju Raveendran is preparing to present new evidence to US courts.
This evidence reportedly indicates that GLAS Trust and the Resolution Professional (RP) consistently misled the Delaware Court, Indian courts, and the public by falsely asserting that $533 million—termed the “Alpha Funds”—was improperly diverted for the personal use of the founders.
