Synopsis

Essar Energy Transition partners with ENKA to establish the UK’s largest low carbon hydrogen production plant at Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. This project aims to enhance the hydrogen industry and support decarbonisation efforts in the region.

Key Takeaways

  • Partnership between EET Hydrogen and ENKA.
  • Establishment of the HPP1 facility in Ellesmere Port.
  • Production capacity of 350MW.
  • Annual CO2 capture of 600,000 tonnes.
  • Support for the HyNet Cluster.

New Delhi, Jan 16 (NationPress) Essar Energy Transition (EET) Hydrogen announced on Wednesday that it has entered into an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) agreement with ENKA for its flagship low carbon hydrogen production facility (HPP1) located at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.

In October 2024, the UK government revealed that funding had been approved to support HPP1, marking it as the country’s first large-scale low carbon hydrogen initiative within the HyNet Cluster.

With a production capacity set at 350MW, HPP1 is projected to capture approximately 600,000 tonnes of CO2 annually – which is comparable to removing around 250,000 vehicles from the roads.

This milestone is significant not only for the HPP1 project but also for the UK hydrogen sector, the HyNet Cluster, and for EET Hydrogen's objective of establishing 4GW of low carbon hydrogen production aimed at aiding industrial enterprises in North West England to decarbonise their operations, preserve jobs, and stimulate economic growth.

ENKA, an international engineering and construction company based in Istanbul, Turkey, is recognized among the country's most prestigious brands.

ENKA is well-known in the UK for its prominent projects, including the Hinkley Point Power Plant in Somerset and the Shotton Mill Paper Mill Factory in Flintshire.

Joe Seifert, CEO of EET Hydrogen, expressed: “After an intense competitive bidding process, we are pleased to announce this essential contract with ENKA. Having successfully delivered over 580 contracts across 57 countries, ENKA has a proven track record in managing intricate projects like HPP1. Their team brings invaluable experience, and we are excited to collaborate with them as we strive to become the UK’s leading producer of low carbon hydrogen.”

Hakan Kozan, a member of ENKA’s Executive Committee, stated: “We are excited to collaborate with EET Hydrogen on the HPP1 initiative, which is a pivotal project that will significantly advance the UK’s low carbon hydrogen sector and contribute to global decarbonisation efforts.

“As a worldwide engineering and construction firm, we offer expertise, engineered solutions, and a dedication to excellence in every project we undertake. This endeavor underscores our commitment to the HyNet Cluster’s goal of lowering emissions and promoting sustainable economic development. We eagerly anticipate delivering a safe and successful project for our esteemed client.”
