Is Elon Musk’s xAI Boosting Its Computing Power to 2 GW?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 31 (NationPress) The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, has announced that his company xAI has acquired a third facility close to its current Memphis locations in the United States, which will increase its artificial intelligence (AI) computing power to nearly 2 gigawatts (GW).
Previously, Musk established a data center in Memphis, named Colossus, and is in the process of developing a second center nearby, referred to as Colossus 2, as indicated by several reports.
The newly secured building is located in Southaven, Mississippi, adjacent to the Colossus 2 facility, according to sources close to the situation.
“xAI has purchased a third building called Macrohardrr,” Musk shared on the social media platform X, stating that it will “elevate @xAI training compute to almost 2GW.”
A single gigawatt can supply power to approximately 750,000 US homes. Musk has openly revealed intentions to construct the largest data center globally dedicated to AI training and previously stated that Colossus 2 will ultimately house 550,000 Nvidia chips, costing tens of billions of dollars.
Furthermore, Musk’s xAI Holdings is reportedly negotiating new funding at an estimated valuation of $230 billion. Musk possesses a 53 percent stake in xAI Holdings, valued at around $60 billion.
In October, Musk took a jab at Wikipedia, asserting that Grokipedia, created by xAI, will outshine the well-known online encyclopedia “by several orders of magnitude in breadth, depth, and accuracy.”
Grokipedia is an AI-enhanced encyclopedia aimed at challenging what Musk perceives as a “woke” and biased Wikipedia.
He characterized Grokipedia as a “significant improvement over Wikipedia” and stated that it aligns with xAI’s mission to assist humanity in better comprehending the universe.
Following a US court's reinstatement of Tesla stock options valued at $139 billion, Musk's net worth surged to nearly $750 billion.
This development has positioned Musk closer to potentially becoming the world's first trillionaire, according to Forbes’ billionaires index.
