New Delhi, Dec 3 (NationPress) - On Wednesday, the government announced the removal of the mandate that required smartphone manufacturers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app. This decision comes in light of a significant increase in voluntary user registrations and growing public confidence in the platform.
The Ministry of Communications highlighted that the app, aimed at safeguarding citizens against cyber fraud and telecom-related crimes, has seen robust acceptance, making the pre-installation requirement redundant.
According to the ministry, “To date, 1.4 crore users have downloaded the Sanchar Saathi app, which assists in reporting nearly 2,000 fraud incidents daily.”
“In just the past 24 hours, six lakh citizens signed up to download the app, indicating a tenfold surge in its usage,” it added.
The initial aim of the mandate was to ensure that less-informed citizens could access essential cybersecurity tools.
However, due to the recent uptick in voluntary adoption, the government has decided to retract the rule.
“Considering the growing acceptance of the Sanchar Saathi app, the Government has opted against enforcing mandatory pre-installation for mobile manufacturers,” stated the Centre.
The ministry reassured the public that the app is secure, does not contain any surveillance features, and is solely intended to protect users from fraud, while also aiding them in reporting cybercrime.
Users have the liberty to uninstall the app at their discretion, promoting a sense of “jan bhagidari” by allowing citizens to engage in the fight against cybercrime.
This announcement followed strong denials by Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia of any snooping allegations in Parliament.
During the Lok Sabha session, he reiterated that the app cannot monitor users and remains inactive unless a user opts to register.
“Snooping is neither feasible nor will it occur with the Sanchar Saathi safety app,” Scindia stated, adding in Hindi, “Sanchar Saathi app se na snooping sambhav hai, na snooping hoga.”
He emphasized that the app serves only to assist people in safeguarding themselves against digital threats like fraudulent mobile connections, scam calls, and lost or stolen devices.
