New Delhi, Sep 4 (NationPress) Leaders from India's electronics and appliance sector have commended the recent GST reform as a significant step forward, aimed at simplifying taxation, bolstering disposable incomes, and enhancing consumer demand.
The government has lowered the GST on essential home appliances, including air conditioners, large-screen televisions, dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, and other household items from 28% to 18%, making these products more affordable just in time for the festive season. However, the GST rates for smartphones and laptops remain steady at 18%.
Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of the India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA), remarked that the GST reform fosters predictability and lays a solid groundwork for industry growth.
He specifically welcomed the reduction of GST on air conditioners and televisions from 28% to 18%.
This adjustment was a long-standing request from the sector, poised to enhance affordability, stimulate domestic demand, and boost consumption, which is crucial for the expansion of India's electronics manufacturing, he noted.
Jitin Makkar, SVP and Group Head, Corporate Sector Ratings at ICRA Limited, indicated that retailers and e-commerce platforms will likely capitalize on this change through promotional efforts, further amplifying its impact.
While acknowledging that supply chain issues persist due to reliance on imported components, he expressed optimism that this move would enhance affordability and revive consumption demand, which has recently been low.
The GST reform strategically promotes discretionary spending, he emphasized, asserting that reduced taxes on appliances and home entertainment items will make them more accessible, fostering both upgrades and first-time purchases.
Arjun Bajaj, Director of Videotex, mentioned that the GST cut on televisions from 28% to 18% would incentivize consumers to upgrade to larger screen sizes, emphasizing that the festive timing amplifies the significance of this decision.
