New Delhi/Seoul, April 21 (NationPress) — HD Hyundai, a premier shipbuilding company based in South Korea, has announced a collaboration with Indian government-supported organizations to create a joint shipyard in India. This partnership was formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with NSHIP TN and Sagarmala Finance Corporation Ltd. (SMFCL) during a ceremony in New Delhi on Monday (local time), according to Yonhap News Agency.
NSHIP TN (National Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries Park) Tamil Nadu is a specialized entity set up by India's port authorities, while SMFCL aids in the development of the country's Sagarmala port infrastructure initiative.
As per the MoU, HD Hyundai will lead the establishment of the joint venture shipbuilding company, becoming the largest shareholder and managing overall operations, with the goal of creating a digital-centric shipyard in India.
This partnership aligns with a bilateral summit attended by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
HD Hyundai also has plans to nurture local talent by setting up a shipbuilding training center and facilitating the entry of South Korean equipment suppliers into the Indian market.
The Indian government intends to place initial shipbuilding orders with HD Hyundai's South Korean facilities prior to the operational launch of the joint shipyard, dispatching local workers for practical experience.
"This recent agreement signifies a shift from discussions to actual business execution in our bilateral shipbuilding cooperation," remarked an official from HD Hyundai, who noted that this collaboration is anticipated to secure new orders and provide opportunities for Korean partners to expand their international presence.
