New Delhi, March 3 (NationPress) A groundbreaking hydrogen fuel cell-based backup power solution for telecom towers is poised to transform the industry by offering a cleaner, more efficient alternative to traditional diesel generators, according to the government on Monday.

This innovative plug-and-play system aligns with India's renewable energy objectives while ensuring seamless connectivity for millions of users across the nation, as stated by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

“India is home to over a million telecom towers, many of which are situated in remote locations where maintaining continuous operations can be difficult due to limited access to the power grid,” the ministry noted.

It further explained that for years, diesel generators have been utilized as backup power sources. However, these generators are expensive, inefficient, and contribute significantly to carbon emissions, rendering them less viable in the long run.

The answer to this challenge lies in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells, which provide an eco-friendly, efficient, and dependable source of energy.

These fuel cells produce electricity using hydrogen as fuel, emitting only water vapor as a by-product.

They also boast quick start-up times, operate at relatively low temperatures, and require significantly less maintenance than diesel generators, making them an attractive option for telecom towers, particularly in regions lacking reliable grid power.

The fuel cell technology operates through an electrochemical reaction, where hydrogen gas is introduced into the anode, oxidized to release protons, and then travels through a polymer membrane to the cathode.

At this point, it reacts with oxygen to generate electricity and water, providing a clean energy solution, the Ministry emphasized.

In line with global environmental initiatives, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) have been promoting greener energy alternatives for telecom towers.

TRAI's 2012 directive mandates that at least 50 percent of rural telecom towers and 33 percent of urban towers transition to hybrid renewable energy sources.

Integrating PEM fuel cells with telecom towers supports this vision, offering an eco-friendly backup system.
