Seoul, March 2 (NationPress) Hyundai Motor, the leading automotive manufacturer in South Korea, reported a 3 percent increase in its U.S. sales for February compared to the previous year, achieving its highest sales record for that month, the company announced on Sunday.
In February, Hyundai Motor's U.S. sales totaled 62,032 units, up from 60,341 units sold in the same month last year, according to the automaker.
This number represents the highest sales for any February, the company noted.
The sales growth was fueled by a remarkable 194 percent increase in the sales of the Santa Fe hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and a 12 percent rise in Ioniq 6 EV sales.
Kia Corp., Hyundai's sibling company and South Korea's second-largest car manufacturer, also achieved a record in U.S. sales for the month, with a 7.2 percent increase year-over-year to 63,303 units.
The rise in sales was attributed to its range of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and strong performance of the new K4 sedan.
Previously, in January, Hyundai Motor experienced a 2.3 percent decline in total monthly sales compared to the previous year, owing to fewer business days. The company sold 310,399 vehicles that month, down from 317,823 units in January of the previous year.
Domestic sales decreased by 7.5 percent year-on-year to 46,054 units, while overseas sales fell by 1.4 percent to 264,345 units.
Hyundai Motor has attributed the decline in sales to the reduced business days due to last month's extended Lunar New Year holiday, according to the Yonhap news agency.
In the domestic market, the Grandeur sedan was the top-selling model, with 5,711 units sold, while the Santa Fe was the most popular SUV, achieving 4,819 units in sales.
Kia also reported a 2.4 percent drop in its January sales, affected by the reduced number of working days during the Lunar New Year holiday.
