Seoul, March 24 (NationPress) South Korea's leading automotive manufacturer Hyundai Motor Group is on track to achieve a significant milestone of 30 million cumulative vehicle sales in the United States this year, reflecting its consistent growth in this crucial international market, as announced by the company on Monday.
Since entering the U.S. market in 1986, Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp. have collectively sold a total of 29,303,995 vehicles by the end of February. Out of this, Hyundai contributed 17,116,065 units, while Kia's sales reached 12,187,930 units.
In the previous year, Hyundai achieved sales of 911,805 units, and Kia followed closely with 796,488 units in the U.S., marking their highest annual sales figures ever in the country, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.
Hyundai and Kia secured the fourth position in total sales in the U.S. for the second year in a row, trailing only General Motors, Toyota Motor Corp., and Ford Motor Co.
Capitalizing on this upward trend, the South Korean automotive group is targeting to exceed the 30 million sales mark this year by utilizing Hyundai and Kia's robust product offerings and adaptable production capabilities.
Hyundai commenced its exports of the Excel sedan to the U.S. in January 1986 and completed its first American manufacturing facility in Alabama in 2005.
Kia set up its U.S. sales subsidiary in 1992 and introduced the Sephia and Sportage models in 1994. Its plant in Georgia broke ground in 2006 and was finalized in early 2010.
Both companies achieved cumulative sales of 1 million units by 1990 and crossed the 10 million-unit mark in 2011. In 2018, they celebrated the milestone of 20 million units sold.
The most popular model for Hyundai in the U.S. has been the Elantra, known as the Avante in South Korea, with 3.88 million units sold since its launch in 1991. For Kia, the Sorento stands out as the best-seller, with 1.83 million units sold since its introduction in 2002.
