India Emerges as a Pioneer in AI-Powered Sustainability Efforts: Report

Bengaluru, Nov 28 (NationPress) About 98 per cent of Indian business leaders are looking to enhance their investments in IT for sustainability over the upcoming 12 months, confirming India's status as a leader in AI-driven sustainability initiatives, according to a report released on Thursday.
The majority of Indian respondents consider IT investments crucial not just for environmental responsibility but also for fostering long-term business resilience (61 per cent) and enhancing brand reputation (64 per cent), as indicated in IBM’s ‘State of Sustainability Readiness Report.’
“With sustainability becoming a core element of business growth strategies, AI is emerging as a transformative factor in promoting responsible growth,” stated Sandip Patel, Managing Director of IBM India/South Asia.
“India distinctly stands out as a leader in AI-driven sustainability. Business leaders throughout the nation recognize sustainability as a strategic lever for transformation, and IBM is advancing AI solutions to expedite their sustainability objectives,” Patel further noted.
A significant 96 per cent of Indian executives believe that AI can positively influence their sustainability targets. Highlighting India’s dedication to sustainable innovation, a large portion of business leaders are already harnessing the capabilities of AI, with 64 per cent of Indian companies actively employing AI in their sustainability initiatives.
The report also pointed out water usage as one of the primary challenges faced by Indian companies. Brand reputation (64 per cent) ranks as the leading motivator for IT sustainability investments among companies in India, followed closely by long-term business resilience (61 per cent).
While 81 per cent of Indian leaders adopt a proactive stance towards climate resilience, 54 per cent engage in opportunity-driven sustainability investments. Additionally, 79 per cent of Indian leaders claim to possess mature systems for tracking sustainability objectives through data, as mentioned in the report.
The report encourages business leaders and organizations to invest in AI tools that cater to their specific needs.
Generative AI can offer insights that assist in identifying opportunities to reduce carbon emissions and develop scenarios and algorithms for more sustainable business practices. This can equip organizations with the insights necessary to tackle climate crises and transform sustainability ambitions into tangible actions.
“As significant challenges to sustainability continue to evolve, organizations should gather data from across their operations to better comprehend the disparities in perceptions between C-suite executives and lower-level decision-makers,” the report emphasized.
