New Delhi, Sep 2 (NationPress) As US President Donald Trump and his administration continue to criticize India for its acquisition of Russian energy, Union Commerce and Trade Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Tuesday that New Delhi is engaging in discussions with Washington to establish a temporary bilateral trade deal.
While addressing an event organized by an industry chamber, Goyal stated, “We are currently in dialogue with the US regarding a bilateral trade agreement (BTA),” following the Trump administration's implementation of 50% tariffs on India, which includes 25% punitive tariffs resulting from the purchase of Russian oil.
India is optimistic about resuming negotiations with the US concerning the proposed BTA and addressing the stalled discussions. The sixth round of BTA talks was set for August 25 in New Delhi, but the US delegation canceled the trip.
Last month, Goyal mentioned that the government’s stance in trade negotiations for free trade agreements with other nations would be driven by national interests and the priorities of Indian industry.
“I have always maintained a clear vision. When we engage in trade agreements, it is crucial to safeguard our national interests. We now typically collaborate with various countries with a pre-understanding: you respect my sensitivities, and I will respect yours. Every country has areas of concern,” the Commerce Minister stated at an event in the national capital.
The minister further emphasized that India’s relationship with the US is “very consequential,” noting that India possesses resilience, strength, and is brimming with opportunities as the world’s fastest-growing economy.
Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed optimism, stating, “Two great countries will resolve this,” as the Trump administration aims to quickly address trade tensions with India.
Speaking to Fox Business, Bessent remarked, “Ultimately, India is the most populous democracy globally. Their values align more closely with ours and China’s than with Russia’s.”
“Two great countries will find a solution,” he was quoted as saying.
