India Set to Play Pivotal Role in the Global Biotech Revolution by 2025: Minister

New Delhi, Jan 1 (NationPress) The year 2025 is projected to see India taking on a vital role in the global biotechnology revolution, facilitated by the newly introduced Bio-E3 policy, as announced by the Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, on Wednesday.

This Bio-E3 policy signifies a major achievement for India’s biotechnology sector, highlighting its capacity to influence the nation’s economy, job market, and environmental sustainability in the upcoming years.

During a conversation with Doordarshan News, the minister underscored the remarkable progress India has made in the field of biotechnology and its escalating global leadership position.

India's biotechnology industry has seen phenomenal growth, soaring from a $10 billion industry in 2014 to over $130 billion in 2024, with forecasts suggesting it could hit $300 billion by 2030.

“India stands not only as a leader in biotechnology but is also at the forefront of a global biotech boom, which will promote innovation, generate job opportunities, and enhance our environmental responsibilities,” Dr. Jitendra Singh remarked.

He stressed the crucial importance of biotechnology for India's future, especially as the country continues to embrace innovation, technology-driven solutions, and emerging startups.

“The vision of PM Modi has always emphasized innovation and technological progress, propelling India into a prominent position within the global biotechnology landscape,” added Dr. Singh.

Currently, India contributes to 60 percent of global vaccine production and hosts the second-largest number of USFDA-approved manufacturing facilities outside the USA.

Dr. Singh also drew parallels between the current “bio-revolution” in India and the IT revolution led by the West, pointing out that the nation’s diverse natural and biological resources are pivotal to its biotechnology success.

He commended the initiatives of Indian startups that are utilizing biotechnology to devise innovative solutions like non-human milk and other sustainable products.

The minister highlighted ongoing projects like the Deep Sea Mission, which has been referenced by PM Modi several times, and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (NRF), designed to stimulate innovation with a 60 percent contribution from the private sector.

In 2024, the Indian government has already allocated Rs 1,000 crore to further expedite advancements in biotechnology.
