How Did the Indian Passport Rise in the Henley Passport Index?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 14 (NationPress) The Indian passport has remarkably moved up five positions in the global mobility rankings for 2026, now providing visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or eTA access to 55 destinations, according to a report released on Wednesday.
The Henley Passport Index ranks India at the 80th position, sharing this spot with Algeria and Niger. Singapore continues to lead the list with visa-free access to an impressive 192 countries. Japan (188 destinations) and South Korea follow closely, underscoring how travel freedom is often linked to a nation’s economic prowess.
Indian travelers can enjoy visa-free access in several regions, including parts of Southeast Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and various island nations. However, it is important to note that advance visas are still necessary for much of Europe, the UK, the US, Canada, and many areas in East Asia.
European passports continue to dominate the top 10 rankings, each offering access to over 180 countries.
Afghanistan remains at the bottom of the list, with only 24 destinations accessible. The United States has regained its position in the top 10 after experiencing a slight decline in recent years, despite both the US and UK facing significant year-on-year reductions in visa-free access.
“Over the past two decades, global mobility has significantly expanded, but its benefits are not equitably distributed,” stated Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners and creator of the Henley Passport Index.
“Currently, passport privileges play a crucial role in shaping opportunities, security, and economic participation, with rising average access concealing a reality in which mobility advantages are increasingly concentrated among the world's most economically powerful and politically stable nations,” he elaborated.
Countries like Denmark, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland share the third position in the index, boasting access to 186 destinations, ahead of an unprecedented group of ten European nations sharing the fourth position.
The UAE has emerged as the top performer on the Henley Passport Index over the last two decades, adding 149 visa-free destinations since 2006. It has climbed 57 places to fifth place with access to 184 destinations, a rise attributed to sustained diplomatic efforts and visa liberalization.
China is ranked 59th, offering visa-free access to 81 destinations.
