“India is steadily enhancing its intellectual property framework, reflected in increased patent filings and a more efficient Indian Patent Office. However, prolonged patent approval timelines and the quality of patents are ongoing challenges when compared to developed countries,” stated Rajesh Nambiar, President of Nasscom.

India continues to solidify its status as a global innovation hub, having seen over 90,000 patents filed in FY24, marking the seventh consecutive year of growth. This increase, primarily driven by resident filers, underscores the country’s advancing domestic innovation capacity and the supportive innovation ecosystem.

In FY24, an unprecedented total of more than 100,000 patents were granted, a threefold increase from the previous year, reflecting both the enhanced efficiency of the Indian Patent Office and the rising quality of applications in line with global innovation standards.

In FY24, Indian resident filers accounted for over 55 percent of total filings, up from 52.3 percent in FY23, indicating a 19 percent year-on-year growth.

The nation’s patent-to-GDP ratio has increased 2.6 times — from 144 in 2013 to 381 in 2023, signaling the growing significance of an innovation-driven economy.

With an annual growth rate of 149.4 percent, India's share of global patents granted has more than doubled, reaching 3.8 percent in 2023 from 1.7 percent the previous year, as reported on the eve of World Intellectual Property (IP) Day.
