New Delhi, March 14 (NationPress) India's free trade agreements (FTAs) with strategically selected partners have resulted in a remarkable 92% surge in merchandise trade between FY21 and FY25. This growth significantly outpaces the 41.5% increase in India's overall merchandise trade globally, according to a recent report.

The report from Atalayar indicates a shift in India's trade policy from a defensive stance to a proactive growth strategy that emphasizes partnerships with complementary trade interests.

"The recent FTAs are not merely theoretical; they are based on existing trade routes that have been expanding rapidly during the post-COVID recovery period," the report stated.

Moreover, projections suggest that India's trade with FTA partners established since 2021 is likely to more than double by 2030 as tariff commitments are solidified and service provisions evolve, leading to enhanced productive capacities.

"India is concentrating on partners where trade complementarities are already robust, logistics are streamlined, and economic interests align," the report elaborated.

By prioritizing partners with whom bilateral trade was already on the rise, India aims to enhance existing dynamics instead of starting new relationships from scratch.

The share of FTA partners in India's overall trade portfolio increased from approximately 11-12% in FY21 to nearly 16.5% by FY25, as noted in the report.

"This strategic shift underscores a focus on bilateral economies characterized by high trade intensity, which align with India's strengths in sectors like manufacturing, energy processing, pharmaceuticals, services, and investment-driven growth," the report highlighted.

The FTA with the United Kingdom, set for finalization in 2025, will enhance market access, tackle barriers in services and professional mobility, and bolster investment connections in technology, finance, advanced manufacturing, and clean energy.

This agreement demonstrates India's readiness to compete in developed markets without sacrificing its domestic economic policy framework, according to the report.

Additionally, the Australia FTA of 2022 has fortified relationships in services, particularly in education and professional sectors, while also fostering collaboration in clean energy and critical minerals. Meanwhile, the New Zealand agreement has led to a trade increase of about 50% from a smaller baseline.
