Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) The interactive media landscape in India has witnessed a remarkable surge, with microdramas emerging as a $300 million industry in just one year, according to a report released on Monday.
The study from Lumikai highlights that a year prior, microdramas were nearly non-existent, but have rapidly captivated mobile-first audiences eager for interactive and customized content formats.
India’s interactive media sector is estimated to be valued at $13.8 billion and is growing at a rate of 17 percent annually across various platforms including video, social media, gaming, animation/VFX, and audio, fueled by a robust base of 877 million smartphone users.
Salone Sehgal, the Founder and Managing Partner of Lumikai, stated, "The achievement of $300 million within the first year of microdramas marks a significant transition towards mobile-native, interactive formats."
"The next chapter of media evolution, driven by interactive formats and artificial intelligence, is currently in progress in India," she added.
The report anticipates that microdrama platforms could scale to $4.5 billion by 2030, propelled by the rising popularity of short-form, vertical video storytelling.
These formats, generally comprising one-minute serialized episodes, have already amassed 450 million downloads and 100 million active monthly users, mirroring the initial growth patterns of OTT platforms.
Additionally, India's free-to-play gaming sector has shown substantial growth, increasing 17 percent year-on-year to exceed $1.5 billion by 2025, with projections reaching $3.2 billion by 2030, as per the report.
The report also noted that about 555 million users engaged in mobile gaming this past year, with one in four contributing to revenue through in-app purchases and advertisements.
Nevertheless, changes in regulations surrounding real-money gaming have prompted shifts in user behavior.
The findings indicate that one in three users have transitioned to offshore betting platforms, spending up to Rs 10,000 monthly in unregulated environments.
In the animation and VFX field, India's $1.6 billion industry is increasingly focusing on original intellectual property, as advancements in AI are cutting production times by as much as 50 percent.
The report also mentioned that specialized digital platforms, such as astrology and micro-learning applications, are outperforming traditional social media in terms of monetization.
