  • 95 factories operating nationwide.
  • Uttar Pradesh leads with 87.5 lakh tons of production.
  • Government allows 10 lakh tons sugar export this season.
  • Optimistic outlook for 2025-26 season.

New Delhi, March 31 (NationPress) The sugar output has reached 247.61 lakh tons as of March 31, 2025, in the ongoing 2024-25 season, with 95 factories actively operating nationwide, according to recent data from the Indian Sugar and Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) released on Monday.

The ISMA stated that sugar production is proceeding as anticipated, ensuring a steady supply of sugar across the country.

Currently, 48 factories in Uttar Pradesh remain operational. Due to enhanced yields from plant cane, the availability of cane has increased, and these factories are projected to continue operations until mid-to-late April 2025. Additionally, sugar recovery rates have improved in the latter half of the season, leading to increased sugar production, according to the ISMA.

Some factories in southern Karnataka are predicted to resume operations during the special season from June/July to September 2025. Historically, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu together contribute about 4 lakh tons of sugar during this period, as per ISMA.

As per the ISMA's state-wise data, Uttar Pradesh has produced 87.5 lakh tons of sugar by March 31, followed by Maharashtra with 80.06 lakh tons, Karnataka (39.55 lakh tons), Gujarat (8.21 lakh tons), and Tamil Nadu (4.16 lakh tons). An additional 28.13 lakh tons is credited to other states.

The ISMA clarified that this data does not account for any sugar diverted for ethanol production.

The ISMA had previously indicated that following a comprehensive review by its executive committee on March 12, 2025, the estimated net sugar production was revised to 264 lakh tons after accounting for 35 lakh tons diverted for ethanol.

“Despite lower production in certain areas, the association reassures that sugar supply will adequately meet domestic demand,” the statement mentioned.

The ISMA expressed optimism for the upcoming 2025-26 season, citing favorable weather and improved planting conditions. The 2024 monsoon has boosted cane planting, especially in Maharashtra and Karnataka, preparing for a timely start of the crushing season in October 2025.

In Uttar Pradesh and other northern regions, initiatives to replace cane varieties are yielding promising results, expected to enhance yields and recovery rates, contributing to strong sugar production in the next season.

The ISMA also noted that the Indian government's recent announcement on January 20, 2025, allowing the export of 10 lakh tons of sugar for the current season has greatly benefited the industry. This policy has helped stabilize domestic sugar stocks, providing financial support to millers. The timely exports have enabled mills to make prompt cane payments, positively impacting 5.5 crore farmers and their families.
