Narayana Murthy Advocates for 70-Hour Workweek, Encourages Youth to Strive for Success

New Delhi, Dec 16 (NationPress) Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has once more championed the idea of a 70-hour workweek, calling on the youth in India to put in significant effort for the progress of the country.
Murthy first introduced the notion of a 70-hour workweek in 2023 as a means to spur national development. While this suggestion faced considerable backlash from various sectors, including medical professionals, it received support from notable figures such as Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal.
During his latest visit to Kolkata, Murthy asserted that the younger generation must understand the importance of “working hard and aiming to make India the best.” He stressed the necessity for Indians to pursue excellence.
"At Infosys, I declared we would aspire to match ourselves against the finest global firms. Once we set ourselves against the best in the world, it's clear we Indians have much work ahead," Murthy stated at the Indian Chamber of Commerce's centenary event, alongside RPSG Group Chairman Sanjiv Goenka.
“Our aspirations must be elevated because 800 million Indians receive free rations, indicating that they live in poverty. If we aren't willing to put in hard work, who will?" he added.
Murthy pointed out that he “recognized the only avenue for a nation to combat poverty is by generating jobs that lead to disposable income. The government has no role in entrepreneurship.”
He emphasized the vital role of entrepreneurs in nation-building, as they create wealth and job opportunities.
"Entrepreneurs are the backbone of a nation; they generate employment, create wealth for their investors, and contribute taxes. Thus, a nation that adopts capitalism will see the development of better roads, trains, and overall infrastructure," he noted.
His remarks come in light of growing concerns regarding workplace stress among young Indians, which has tragically resulted in the loss of lives. Health specialists have also cautioned against the adverse effects of prolonged working hours, which can harm both the physical and mental well-being of employees, as well as negatively impact their personal and social relationships.
