New Delhi, March 29 (NationPress) The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has recently announced new regulations regarding the numeric UPI ID solution aimed at improving the user experience for UPI number-based transactions. These regulations will take effect on April 1.

It will be required for UPI member banks, UPI applications, and third-party service providers to comply with these new regulations.

As per the updated guidelines, any UPI ID linked to an inactive mobile number will be rendered inactive. This means that if the mobile number associated with a UPI user's bank account remains inactive for an extended period, the UPI ID will be unlinked, preventing the user from utilizing the UPI service.

In such cases, all UPI service users must ensure their registered mobile number with the bank is active.

The UPI service can function seamlessly only when bank records are kept up-to-date with the correct mobile number. Issues may arise with UPI services that are linked to inactive or reassigned mobile numbers.

According to the new directives from the Department of Telecom (DoT), a mobile number can be reassigned to a new user after a 90-day disconnection period. Telecom providers deactivate mobile numbers that have not been used for calls, messages, or data, leading to the emergence of what are known as recycled or churned numbers.

Under these new regulations, the mobile number verified by the bank will serve as the user's UPI identifier.

Additionally, banks and UPI applications must update their mobile number records weekly to avoid errors caused by recycled or modified numbers.

Applications will need to obtain user consent before assigning numeric UPI IDs. Users must actively choose to participate in this feature since the default setting is opted out.

In cases where there is a delay in NPCI verification, UPI applications may temporarily manage numeric UPI ID issues internally. Such issues must be documented and reported to NPCI monthly for monitoring.
