New Delhi, May 6 (NationPress) OpenAI, under the leadership of Sam Altman, will still be governed and managed by the nonprofit organization. In a significant development, its ‘for-profit LLC’ is set to become a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), which will enhance the nonprofit's resources to facilitate a variety of benefits, as announced by the company.
Originally established as a nonprofit, OpenAI is presently overseen and controlled by that same nonprofit.
According to a statement from the creators of ChatGPT, “Moving forward, it will remain under the oversight of the nonprofit. Our for-profit LLC, which has operated under this nonprofit framework since 2019, will evolve into a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC)–a purpose-oriented corporate structure that must balance the interests of shareholders with its mission.”
The nonprofit organization will not only control but also hold a significant stake in the PBC.
OpenAI Board chair Bret Taylor remarked, “Our mission stays unchanged, and the PBC will uphold the same objectives. We decided to keep the nonprofit in control of OpenAI after consulting with civic leaders and engaging in constructive discussions with the Attorney General offices of Delaware and California.”
Altman emphasized that as the PBC expands, the resources available to the nonprofit will also increase, allowing for greater initiatives.
“We are looking forward to receiving recommendations from our nonprofit commission on how we can ensure AI benefits everyone, not just a select few. Their insights will guide our nonprofit efforts towards fostering a more democratic AI future, impacting crucial sectors like health, education, public services, and scientific research,” he wrote in a letter to employees.
“We aspire for our nonprofit to become the largest and most impactful organization in history, dedicated to leveraging AI for optimal outcomes for individuals,” he added.
Altman mentioned that this approach positions them to continue advancing safely and rapidly, making exceptional AI accessible to everyone.
“Building AGI is our contribution to human progress; we eagerly anticipate the contributions you will make next,”
Altman concluded.
