Chennai, Oct 27 (NationPress) The state government has reported a remarkable increase in paddy procurement under the DMK administration, showcasing nearly a doubling of the average annual procurement compared to the previous government.
As per an official announcement, a total of 1,70,45,545 tonnes of paddy was procured between 2021 and 2025, resulting in an annual average of 42,61,386 tonnes. In contrast, the earlier administration (2016-17 to 2020-21) procured 1,13,51,469 tonnes, averaging 22,70,293 tonnes annually.
This indicates an increase of 19,91,093 tonnes under the current government, attributed to better operational efficiency, proactive planning, and farmer support. The government also noted that the current paddy procurement season commenced on September 1, a month earlier than the previous practice of starting on October 1.
As of October 24, 1,853 Direct Procurement Centres (DPCs) have been established throughout Tamil Nadu, with 10.4 lakh tonnes of paddy already procured. Of this amount, 8.77 lakh tonnes have been transported to various districts by train, while the rest is securely stored at the respective procurement centres.
The official statement highlighted that each DPC processes approximately 1,000 bags of paddy daily, with working hours extended until 8 p.m. to manage the significant inflow of produce. To cater to the high demand, DPCs are operational even on Sundays, with 5,510.4 tonnes procured on October 19 alone.
This proactive strategy has ensured timely payments to farmers, alleviating their burdens during the peak harvest season. The government has also provided sufficient logistics and storage support.
An inventory of 2.65 crore gunny bags and 28,856 plastic tarpaulins has been distributed statewide.
Moreover, 4,000 lorries and 13-15 trains are being utilized daily to transport nearly 35,000 tonnes of paddy. To further streamline the process, 100 additional load workers have been recruited since October 21. The Food and Civil Supplies Department is conducting ongoing monitoring to ensure seamless procurement, storage, and transportation across all districts.
