RBI Imposes Financial Penalty on Airtel Payments Bank for Non-Compliance
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 30 (NationPress) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has levied a financial penalty of Rs 31.80 lakh on Airtel Payments Bank Limited for failing to adhere to specific provisions outlined in the RBI's directives on 'Disclosure in Financial Statements'.
This penalty was imposed under the authority granted to RBI by section 47A(1)(c) in conjunction with section 46(4)(i) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
A statutory inspection aimed at supervisory evaluation (ISE 2025) regarding the bank's financial standing as of March 31, 2025, was conducted by RBI.
According to the central bank, the monetary penalty of Rs 31.80 lakh was due to non-compliance with certain directives concerning 'Disclosure in Financial Statements'.
Following the supervisory findings of non-compliance and subsequent correspondence, RBI issued a notice to the bank requesting an explanation as to why a penalty should not be imposed for its disregard of the specified directions.
“Upon reviewing the bank’s response to the notice, along with additional information provided and verbal arguments presented during the hearing, RBI determined that the allegations concerning the failure to disclose specific complaints in the bank's annual financial statements for the fiscal year 2024-25 were valid, thus justifying the imposition of a monetary penalty,” the RBI stated.
This action highlights deficiencies in regulatory compliance and does not comment on the legitimacy of any transactions or agreements made by the bank with its clients.
“Moreover, the imposition of this monetary penalty does not preclude any further actions that may be initiated by RBI against the bank,” the central bank noted.
