Why is South Korea Investigating Instagram's Account Deactivation?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Feb 11 (NationPress) South Korea's media regulatory authority announced on Wednesday that it has initiated an investigation into the US-based social media platform Instagram, following claims that the platform unjustifiably disabled user accounts last year. The Korea Media and Communications Commission (KMCC) stated that the inquiry will scrutinize whether Meta Platforms Inc.'s Instagram breached local telecommunications regulations and whether it offered adequate and timely assistance to users affected, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
This action comes after reports emerged that numerous Korean user accounts were permanently deactivated in May and June of the previous year, despite having no connection to Instagram’s initiatives aimed at safeguarding minors from inappropriate content under its revised teen protection policies, according to KMCC.
The KMCC affirmed that fines and corrective measures would be imposed if any infractions are found.
Last month, the media regulatory body requested that the US-based social media platform X propose strategies to shield young users from sexual content produced by the AI model Grok.
The KMCC remarked that it had communicated this request to the platform amidst growing concerns regarding AI-generated deepfake sexual content.
"We have urged the operator of X to take precautions against potential illegal activities involving Grok and to outline measures that protect adolescents from harmful content, including restricting or managing their access," the KMCC stated in an announcement.
According to South Korean legislation, social network platform operators, including X, must appoint an official responsible for minor protection and submit an annual report, as noted by the commission.
The KMCC highlighted that this request aligns with regulatory requirements, emphasizing that the creation, distribution, or storage of non-consensual sexual deepfake content is punishable by law.
"We aim to actively foster the responsible and secure development of new technologies," remarked KMCC Chairperson Kim Jong-cheol.
