New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) The Union government has unveiled plans to introduce a new cooperative-driven taxi service named Sahkar Taxi. This service will offer bike, cab, and auto services to challenge established ride-hailing platforms such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido.
The initiative aims to create an alternative transportation service where drivers can earn directly without having to share their profits with large corporations.
Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, announced in Parliament that Sahkar Taxi will register two-wheeler taxis, auto-rickshaws, and four-wheeler taxis nationwide.
Shah emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's slogan, 'Sahkar se Samriddhi', is more than just a phrase; it reflects the Ministry of Cooperation's tireless efforts over the past three and a half years to bring this vision to life.
He stated that the Sahkar taxi service is set to launch in the coming months.
In contrast to private companies, this government-supported initiative will ensure that all earnings are retained by the drivers, enhancing their financial benefits.
Shah mentioned, “Profits from this service will not benefit any large industrialist but will solely support the drivers.”
Moreover, a cooperative insurance company will be established to manage insurance within the cooperative framework of the country, according to Shah.
“In a short period, it is expected to evolve into the largest private insurance entity,” he noted.
This new initiative aspires to empower drivers while simultaneously providing passengers with a dependable and cost-effective transportation option.
A similar initiative is already in action in West Bengal under the 'Yatri Sathi' service, which started in Kolkata but has now extended to cities like Siliguri, Asansol, and Durgapur.
Yatri Sathi offers rapid bookings, support in local languages, affordable rates, and 24/7 customer service, making it a favored choice among travelers.
In 2022, Kerala became the first state to initiate a government-operated online taxi service called 'Kerala Savaari'. Although it was halted due to low demand, the state government intends to relaunch it with revised pricing and enhanced software.
